Huge congratulations to Joshua Raz, Newcastle University grad and official winner of this year’s prestigious HIX Award.

Launched in 2013, the HIX Award was conceived by famed restaurateur Mark Hix and the director of CNB Gallery, Rebecca Lidert. It is specifically designed for emerging artists in the hopes that it can be their first step towards a career after university.
This year marked record submissions for the Award and from 21 finalists, Raz emerged victorious with his evocative painting Indoor Outdoor Tropics. His prize includes £1,000 cash (which he will use to fund a studio), a £1,000 voucher for art materials from CASS Art Supplies, £1,000 HIX dining vouchers, a trip to HIX Townhouse in Lyme Regis and a feature in the autumn issue of HIX magazine!
Also noteworthy, is this year’s runner-up for the prize, Hun Kyu Kim (aka Jake the Dog), and the People’s Choice winner, Karen Doyle.

Acclaimed British artist and judging panel chair, Gavin Turk, said of the process ‘The winner by a whisker from very strong competition is a large ambitious work that simultaneously blends various painting styles and in a collage-like way mixes historic quotes and modern domestic representation. Congratulations and best of luck to all the young artists in the show.’
