It’s that time of year again! Head to the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair This Sunday!

It’s that time of year again! The annual Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair is back, this time in its namesake of Vauxhall on SUNDAY, 9 JULY 2017 from 12 – 6pm.

This year’s brand-new theme, ‘The Original,’ promises to be a prime opportunity to snap up one-of-a-kind original as well as limited edition artworks all for a fraction of their usual prices. The one-day festival will take place in the streets of Vauxhall’s vibrant new gallery district with the support of Newport Street Gallery and U+I Plc, and will present an eclectic line-up of over one hundred artists who will be selling exclusive pieces from the boots of both new and vintage Vauxhall cars.

Festive Cultural Traffic comes to East London!

Just in time for your last minute Christmas shopping, Juju’s presents Festive Cultural Traffic from 17-18 December, 2016.

The counter culture event returns to the Truman Brewery and adjacent Spitalfields market once again, offering a broad vivid experience away from the dull predictable mainstream Christmas shopping options, providing an opportunity to engage with the past present and future of counter culture at an affordable level for that perfect gift.

We had to tear ourselves away from the eye-catching Portia Munsen, and an overdose of plastic pinks. Gary Hume was the perfect antidote: his elegant series of charcoal and enamel flowers was great and subtle delight.

CULTURAL TRAFFIC debuts at London Art Week!

Just in case you thought Frieze week was going to be same-old-same-old, we couldn’t be more excited to announce the upcoming first annual CULTURAL TRAFFIC, the fair for dealers in counter culture and independent producers of zines, prints, catalogues, vinyls and tapes!

Presented by Juju’s, the event will take place on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October at Juju’s Bar & Stage in Shoreditch, East London.

Of CULTURAL TRAFFIC itself, organiser Toby Mott explains, ‘CULTURAL TRAFFIC is a fascinating window into the flourishing post-digital zine scene and is inspired by my visits to the L.A. and New York Art Book Fairs, where I found an exciting dynamic marketplace for the global resurgence in self-publishing. I connected with the eclectic mix of material I found there, driven by the punk ethic of self-publishing, and reflecting both a pre- and post-digital aesthetic. DIY vintage counter-culture meets radical sexual politics and activism – it all comes together within an arts context.’

After following the progression of this year’s SOLO Award since the competition was first announced, we are so thrilled to share that a winner has been selected!

Hopefully, you had a chance to view the incredible shortlisted artists’ works on our ArtAttack App, which we were honoured to exclusively showcase on the ‘Curated Art’ page. Well, one of these talented creatives is now the big winner! We are thrilled to introduce Victoria Lucas!

Victoria Lucas, ‘Lay of the land (and other such myths,’ Detail of installation, Dimensions variable, 2016.

Victoria is a Sheffield-based artist represented by Mark Devereaux Projects. She received her BA (hons) in Fine Art (Sculpture) from Norwich School of Art and Design in 2004, followed by her MFA Fine Arts from the University of Leeds in 2007. Currently, she is a Fine Art Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.

Victoria’s artworks are often initiated by a physical encounter with a place, site or landscape. By concentrating on these contexts and their current or former inhabitants, she develops conceptual narratives that subvert and categorise events and myths using a site’s materiality as a catalyst.

We had the chance to speak with Victoria about her SOLO Award victory and greater artistic practice.

TOMORROW: Don’t Miss the Art Car Boot Fair!

Another year, another Art Car Boot Fair, and as always, this year’s art-packed Sunday, taking place tomorrow 12 June at the Old Truman Brewery, will not disappoint!

In honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday, Sir Peter Blake has created a limited edition portrait of HRH. The work is based on a photo taken by Lord Lichfield, which was then painted for a 2002 reception at the RA to honour the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Staying true to the Art Car Boot Fair’s theme of ‘The Hand’, the work features a hand-drawn hand that points at the artist’s signature.

‘I feel it is essential for art to take on serious issues and to reflect our societies and the issues of the day’ – ArtAttack Interview Graeme Messer

ArtAttack first came upon artist Graeme Messer‘s work at this year’s The Other Art Fair in London. We were drawn in by his witty and unique mirror works made for the fair and knew instantly this was an artist we wanted to watch.

After requesting to interview him for this very blog, Graeme let us know about a special project close to his heart; We R is an upcoming art exhibition exploring the meaning of LGBT identity and celebrating difference. Launching during Pride Week London, the show at Espacio Gallery will include nineteen artists from all different cultures and nationalities contributing to a really authentic representation of the diversity and fullness of the LGBT community.

The goal is to to reach out to the many people who find it difficult to be their true selves and to challenge viewers to believe and remember that being different is an inalienable right.

In the words of exhibition curators, Bettina Stuurman and Joao Trindade, ‘We always talk about equality and whilst it may be important to have have the same rights, we really wanted to show how you must celebrate difference. We are proud of this collection which reminds us to think about the present representation of the LGBT community. We want people to leave the exhibition feeling positive, excited and remembering their own unique nature – and this is what we hope the art has captured.’

We decided to chat with Graeme about We R as a preview for our readers to this sure-to-be powerful and moving exhibition.

‘It is a little like a partnership working together with the ink’ – ArtAttack Interviews Bridget Davies

As you may have seen, ArtAttack has been interviewing a number of fantastic artists discovered at this year’s The Other Art Fair, London.

Bridget Davies, who’s interview follows below, drew us in with her elegant and evocative ink works of glamorous women, which in many ways feel reminiscent of another era.

We spoke with Bridget to discuss her artistic practice and delve a bit deeper into what has inspired her very specific and recognisable style.
