CULTURAL TRAFFIC debuts at London Art Week!

Just in case you thought Frieze week was going to be same-old-same-old, we couldn’t be more excited to announce the upcoming first annual CULTURAL TRAFFIC, the fair for dealers in counter culture and independent producers of zines, prints, catalogues, vinyls and tapes!

Presented by Juju’s, the event will take place on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October at Juju’s Bar & Stage in Shoreditch, East London.

Of CULTURAL TRAFFIC itself, organiser Toby Mott explains, ‘CULTURAL TRAFFIC is a fascinating window into the flourishing post-digital zine scene and is inspired by my visits to the L.A. and New York Art Book Fairs, where I found an exciting dynamic marketplace for the global resurgence in self-publishing. I connected with the eclectic mix of material I found there, driven by the punk ethic of self-publishing, and reflecting both a pre- and post-digital aesthetic. DIY vintage counter-culture meets radical sexual politics and activism – it all comes together within an arts context.’

Essex Architecture Weekend is Tomorrow!

Tomorrow, Saturday 10 September, marks the start of the 2-day Essex Architecture Weekend presented by Radical Essex.

The festival, themed ‘The Modernist County,’ will pivot around three exciting sites: the Bata Estate in East Tilbury, Frinton-on-Sea and Silver End village. The goal is to illustrate how these experimental community models pioneered Modernist architecture.

The Art Car Boot Fair Comes to Hastings!

To kick off the British summer, which let’s be honest has JUST started, don’t miss the always fabulous Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair, this time in Hastings for the first time ever. Taking place on 16 July, the event, as always, will feature a number of big name artists including John Cooper Clarke, Gavin Turk, Marcus Harvey, Sir Peter Blake and Sir Quentin Blake. All of these artists will be at the event selling their prized editions at a friendly price. 

Other artists participating include: Keith Coventry, Martin Creed, HelenA Pritchard, Rachel Howard, Tracey Emin, and – for the first time – Mr Bingo.

The MASK Prize. Creativity Competition with Prizes for Young People and Schools in Africa

 

ArtAttack continuously follows current Creative Art Competitions within the Global Art Industry. Our most recent attraction is to The Annual National Creativity Competition in Africa for schools and young people under the age of 25, which is the renowned ‘MASK Prize‘, endorsed by Kenya Ministry Of Education.

The 2016 Mask Prize is an initiative of the Mobile Art School in Kenya that seeks to promote creativity and innovation among the young generation. This is another chance for young artists from Kenya, Africa and its diaspora to show the world what they’ve got. Currently in its 4th year, the MASK Art Prize has been able to award and mentor a myriad of Kenyan and African artists through its competitions and expose them to the global art world. Next year, The MASK Prize will collaborate with Turner Contemporary, which will be very exciting!

This year’s theme is “Young People-The Creative Nation”.

Artworks are submitted online in a variety of media and reflect innovative ideas. All entries were in one of the following forms:

• Paintings, Drawings, Collages, Sculpture, Installations and Prints.
• Graffiti Art.
• Digital/Computer Art.
• Photographs and Photojournalism.
• Singing, Dancing, Performing Arts and Playing Musical Instruments.
• Entrepreneurial/Business Ideas.

Part of why ArtAttack is introducing you to The MASK Prize is due to the 2016 Award Ceremony that takes place this week on the 23^rd of June at the Michael Joseph Art Centre in Nairobi and some selected works will be exhibited in the UK at the Saatchi Gallery, University for the Creative Arts and Turner Contemporary.

ArtAttack Launch Exhibition Artists Announced!

 

Massive congratulations to the 7 artists officially chosen for the ArtAttack Launch Exhibition from our #HangInChelsea competition.

The artists are:

1. Massimo Agostinelli. American-Italian, but London-born artist, Agostinelli, is known for his ‘Word Play | Text Art’ works which have been exhibited in galleries in London and New York and are held among collections in major cities across 5 continents.

2. Samin Ahmadzadeh. This Iran-born artist and CSM graduate’s background in street       photography is combined with a passion of expressing her personal views on sociological and cultural matters of her country. Her practice continues to evolve with a specific focus on archival collections of her family’s cultural history.

TOMORROW: Don’t Miss the Art Car Boot Fair!

Another year, another Art Car Boot Fair, and as always, this year’s art-packed Sunday, taking place tomorrow 12 June at the Old Truman Brewery, will not disappoint!

In honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday, Sir Peter Blake has created a limited edition portrait of HRH. The work is based on a photo taken by Lord Lichfield, which was then painted for a 2002 reception at the RA to honour the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Staying true to the Art Car Boot Fair’s theme of ‘The Hand’, the work features a hand-drawn hand that points at the artist’s signature.

PREVIEW: Ally McIntyre ‘The Sun Popped’ Opening Tonight at CNB Gallery

After winning last year’s prestigious HIX Award, Canadian emerging painter, Ally McIntyre, is back in London with a solo exhibition at CNB Gallery.

The Sun Poppped, which opens 25 May, challenges the age old concept that there can be a ‘perfect’ in painting, blending traditional genres, iconographies and artistic processes to create an alternative mythology in a new painterly age.

The paintings on view present an alternative to traditional heliocentric (male/patriarchal) worship, instead making nature, animals and the cosmos the receivers of praise and the central figures of faith. And whilst the theme and vibe of the work itself is very much mythological, it strongly alludes to the contemporary feminism, as well as the protection of nature and animals.

Yayoi Kusama Comes to London! An immersive exhibition at Victoria Miro.

Victoria Miro presents a new exhibition by Yayoi Kusama. Spanning the gallery’s three locations and waterside garden, the exhibition features new paintings, pumpkin sculptures, and mirror rooms, all made especially for this presentation.

MY HEART’S ABODE, 2016.

This is the artist’s most extensive exhibition at the gallery to date, and it is the first time mirror rooms have gone on view in London since Kusama’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012.

Painting has always played a Part in My Life- ArtAttack Interviews Christian De Wulf.

ArtAttack‘s next The Other Art Fair artist interview is particularly unique and will undoubtedly capture attention due to artist Christian De Wulf‘s original trade, psychotherapy. De Wulf uses this background extensively in his creative process, interpreting his understanding of the psyche into imaginative pieces of art work.

The Belgium-born artist believes that the underlying psyche of an individual is not easy to determine and in his work, looks at what happens if you magnify those inner-most thoughts, emotions and feelings.

Personally, what I find most interesting about De Wulf is that he is not just an artist/art lover, but works alongside seemingly non-art related personal interests to create his works. Of course, his collections resonate in modern society due to the extensive connection between art and therapy and the contemporary use of art therapy. 

What first appears quite simple — acrylic paint and canvas — involves a great deal more than meets the eye and we are delighted to share this with you.
