A £10,000 prize will make this year’s HIX Award more exciting than ever!

The HIX Award is back this year and more exciting than ever with a £10,000 cash prize to be awarded to the overall winner thanks to new sponsors Coutts and Baxterstory! The award itself is even designed by art world legend Damien Hirst so artists, we’d suggest you get submitting as soon as possible!

The annual emerging art award, which is open to current students and recent graduates of UK art colleges alike, was created five years ago by restaurateur and art aficionado, Mark Hix, to give young artists a platform to showcase their work and take their first steps in their professional careers.

Sisters Doing It For Themselves: Brains & Lip Takeover at CNB Gallery

Monday 24th April sees the private view of Brains & Lip Takeover at East London’s emerging art hotspot, CNB Gallery. The all-woman exhibition, which showcases the work of nine fantastic artists, is curated by Claire Orme and Alice Steffen, the creative duo behind Brains & Lip.

Controversial, brash and witty, the artworks on view challenge and reclaim what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. The subversive painting, illustration and sculpture that feature in the exhibition explore discourses of identity, sexuality and female empowerment, resisting the restrictive expectations of the elitist, patriarchal art world.

CULTURAL TRAFFIC debuts at London Art Week!

Just in case you thought Frieze week was going to be same-old-same-old, we couldn’t be more excited to announce the upcoming first annual CULTURAL TRAFFIC, the fair for dealers in counter culture and independent producers of zines, prints, catalogues, vinyls and tapes!

Presented by Juju’s, the event will take place on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October at Juju’s Bar & Stage in Shoreditch, East London.

Of CULTURAL TRAFFIC itself, organiser Toby Mott explains, ‘CULTURAL TRAFFIC is a fascinating window into the flourishing post-digital zine scene and is inspired by my visits to the L.A. and New York Art Book Fairs, where I found an exciting dynamic marketplace for the global resurgence in self-publishing. I connected with the eclectic mix of material I found there, driven by the punk ethic of self-publishing, and reflecting both a pre- and post-digital aesthetic. DIY vintage counter-culture meets radical sexual politics and activism – it all comes together within an arts context.’

Looking In: Katharina Marszewski’s ‘All Eyez Inn’ at l’étrangère

With her latest exhibition, ‘All Eyez Inn,’ opening tonight at l’étrangére, Polish-born artist, Katharina Marszewski, seeks to highlight what she considers to be an absolutely integral condition of our humanity: the act of looking in.

Through work that incorporates sculpture, screen printing and photography, Katharina has created an installation showcasing our contemporary reality, which melds together the past, present and future.

‘A re-negotiation with Modernism’ – David Ben White at l’étrangère

Inside Outside at  l’étrangère presents a new body of work encompassing painting and sculpture by the British artist, David Ben White.

Absorbed within the language and aspirations of modernist architecture, design and art, White’s paintings and sculptures disrupt the self-enclosed logic of this prescriptive legacy through a subversion of its objects and spaces. For his first exhibition at l’étrangère, White will treat the spaces of the gallery as subjects to be reinterpreted; the homogenous model of the white cube is reformed via signifiers of a familiar, domestic interior. Upon entering the gallery, a constructed environment comprising painting, sculpture and vinyl installation draws the viewer into a re-configuration of the relationship between gallery, artwork and spectator, one that gestures towards an interior design logic.

I had the chance to speak with David about his artistic practice and forthcoming exhibition.

And the 2015 HIX Award Goes To…

It’s official, the 2015 HIX Award has been won!

The recipient of this year’s exciting art prize is Allyson McIntyre who has just completed an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, and in fact applied for this award whilst finishing up her degree.

Founded in 2013 by famed restaurateur Mark Hix alongside CNB Gallery director, Rebecca Lidert, the award is designed to provide young, emerging artists a platform to show their work, in hopes of giving them that first boost they need following graduation. In a sense, the prize works to set artists off in the right direction post-university, which of course, gives it a special place in our hearts here at ArtAttack, where we strive to help student and graduate artists jumpstart their artistic futures.
